High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)
The HDL cholesterol particle is the smallest lipoprotein but the most dense (containing the highest proportion of protein to cholesterol), hence called high-density. HDL cholesterol is the "good/healthy cholesterol”, a form of cholesterol that removes excessive cholesterol from the blood and in this way reduces the chance of unhealthy cholesterol (LDL) accumulating in the arteries. It also helps maintain the health of the inner walls of the blood vessels and protects against artherosclerosis. Therefore, high HDL levels reduce the risk for heart disease, but low levels increase the risk.
